The context

GPS stops working the moment you walk indoors, and the usual workarounds cost money and maintenance: Bluetooth beacons, wireless anchors, hardware bolted to the ceiling of every corridor.

Over solved the positioning problem a different way, with VPS relocalisation, the device works out where it is by looking at the space through the camera. That technology is the foundation; this project is the navigation experience built on top of it, and it needs no GPS, no beacons and no hardware installed in the building.

What it does

Think of it as Google Maps for interiors. You pick a destination (a shop, a stand, any target) and it routes you there by the best path, in two modes:

  • In AR, with a 3D arrow anchored in the physical space, pointing you along the route as you walk.
  • On a 2D map, in a minimal, Google-like style, for when you just want to glance at where you are going.

The map is fully explorable rather than route-only, and every target is organised by category and keyword, so you can browse for what you need instead of knowing the name of it in advance.

My role

I built this one almost entirely on my own, from the design of the experience through to the implementation.

Where it is going

It was built for one of the largest shopping malls in Europe, and the idea is now being expanded to others indoor scenarios.
